Architecture

The architectural design of the BAITAN Hotel stems from the idea of evoking a building typology typical of the Sicilian territory, namely the “Court structure,” revised and reinterpreted in a contemporary key.

A tribute to the architecture of the past, the elemental gesture of appropriating space by drawing a protective enclosure generating the courtyard dwelling type that was the basis of the formation of the ancient city fabrics of southern Europe, northern Africa and the Near East.
The courtyard house expresses, concretely and symbolically, the same common roots of the civilizations that lined the shores of the Mediterranean, through wall cells that wrap around a central courtyard, the essence of the house of the origins that will give rise to much architecture based on the notion of the enclosure, as can be well seen in our nearby countryside with the rural construction called the BAGLIO.

In Sicilian territory, a baglio (bagghiu, in the Sicilian language) is a fortified farmhouse with a large courtyard reminiscent of a court. The birth of the baglio coincides with the “colonizing” phenomenon of vast, abandoned and uncultivated inland areas of Sicily by local nobles (the “barons”) between the 16th and 18th centuries.
If its closed form indicates, as Gottfried Semper noted, the act of defending the contained space, the internal structure of the courtyard house communicates welcome and hospitality, whether it is the shaded courtyard of an Islamic house or the ‘atrium of an Italic dwelling.

So Baglio e Corte becomes synonymous with Welcoming and Hospitality, two key elements that made us think of reproposing it at BAITAN Hotel, to make our guests’ stay as comfortable as possible.

Naming

It was from the banner of the City of Marsala that the search was born for a unique naming to associate with our Hotel

AIAY BAITAN

It tells us precisely about the origins of the City of Marsala, from the ancient Greek “Lilybaion,” the “City that looks at Libya.” or the ancient name for Marsala.

In the study carried out by the Communication Agency
